Looking for something to varnish that commercial or industrial work surface? Maybe you have a shop counter, work bench, or kitchen bench-top that needs a solid polyurethane finish? Your best bet is Cabot’s Cabothane Clear polyurethane varnish.

Cabot’s Cabothane Clear is a water-based polyurethane varnish. It’s super hard-wearing and will survive any day-to-day activity, even on high-traffic surfaces. It’s fast-drying, allowing for the application of three coats in a single day with just minimal drying in between.

We’ve put together this handy step-by-step guide for applying Cabot’s Cabothane Clear to a commercial timber bench-top.

Steps

Drill holes in your timber benchtop, attach it to the metal (or other material) frame with screws, and fill each of the drill holes with wooden dowel plugs and wood glue.

Apply a small amount of wood putty to each hole and scrape the surface flat with an iQuip Bonum Filling Blade. Then dry the surface using an iQuip 26HG1800 heat gun and sand the filled holes flat to the same level as the surrounding benchtop. Give the whole surface a thorough sanding, making sure to sand with the grain, and then sand all edges.

After sanding, apply Cabot’s Cabothane Clear. With additional sanding between layers, apply 3 layers in total using a paint roller with an Oldfields Microfibe Mini Roller Cover.

So we tried it…

PaintAccess had heard great things about Cabot’s Cabothane Clear polyurethane varnish so we decided to try it for ourselves. We applied it to the new timber top of our Testing Bar at Matraville, designed to allow customers to try new products directly from the shelf, see how they work, ask questions and get help directly from the experts.

We built a frame and got ourselves a solid timber work surface from our friends at Bunnings. And we got ourselves a tin of Cabot’s Cabothane Clear polyurethane varnish.

We’re super happy with the result and we look forward to having customers come and test our products.

We created this video so that you can see just how easy it is to apply Cabot’s Cabothane Clear polyurethane varnish.
